A Legacy of Ranching, Sheep, and Horsemanship

Sweet Grass County has long been known for its vast grasslands, hardworking ranching families, and deep connection to livestock and horses. Since the late 1800s, the county has been a cornerstone of Montana’s sheep and cattle industry, with generations of ranchers tending their flocks and herds across the rolling prairies and foothills of the Crazy Mountains. At its peak, the region was one of the largest wool-producing areas in the United States, a legacy that continues today with family-run sheep and cattle operations that have stood the test of time.

For these ranching families, horses have always been more than just a means of transportation—they are trusted partners in daily ranch work, from gathering livestock to moving herds across the range. The skills of roping, cutting, and working cattle on horseback are deeply embedded in the local culture, passed down from one generation to the next. Ranch rodeos, team roping events, and 4-H livestock programs are integral to the Sweet Grass community, celebrating the enduring bond between ranchers, riders, and their horses.

A Heritage Worth Passing On

That heritage, however, is at a crossroads. Today's rural youth are growing up increasingly disconnected — from the land, from meaningful outdoor work, and from the hands-on skills that have defined life in Sweet Grass County for over a century. At the same time, working ranches across the region are facing a real and growing challenge: finding the next generation of skilled, motivated workers who understand horses, livestock, and the rhythms of ranch life.

The Sweet Grass County Equestrian Center exists to bridge that gap. We believe that the traditions of this county — horsemanship, hard work, stewardship of the land — are not just worth preserving, they are worth actively teaching. And we believe the young people of this community are ready to learn.

Sweet Grass County has a rich history of ranching, rodeos, and horsemanship—and now, we’re creating a world-class equestrian center that will serve riders, 4-H kids, and equine programs for generations to come.

From training arenas to thrilling competitions and community events, this center will be a place where horses bring people together. But we can’t do it alone—we need your help to bring this vision to life!
