HONORING TRADITION, INSPIRING THE FUTURE
From the Arena to the Ranch
The Sweet Grass County Equestrian Center is not just a training facility — it is a career pipeline. We work directly with ranching families and operations across Sweet Grass County and the surrounding region to place our graduates into real jobs on working ranches. The ranchers get skilled, motivated young workers who understand horses and livestock. The youth get meaningful careers rooted in the traditions of this place. And Montana's ranching heritage endures for another generation.
This is the vision: enrollment, training, placement, and careers — a clear, supported path from a young person's first introduction to horsemanship all the way to a lasting livelihood in the industry that defines Sweet Grass County.
Our Vision & Values
At Sweet Grass County Equestrian Center, our vision extends beyond the arena—we are building a legacy where horses, people, and purpose converge to create something extraordinary, especially for rural youth. We believe in the power of equestrian excellence, community, and healing, and our mission is to provide a world-class facility that empowers young riders from rural communities, supports those who find solace and strength through horses, and fosters a lifelong passion for the equine world.
Equestrian Excellence
We are dedicated to cultivating a high-performance equestrian culture that supports both English and Western disciplines, from the precision of dressage and Hunter/Jumper to the thrill of Western riding. Our facility nurtures riders of all levels, from beginners to elite competitors, with expert instruction and premier facilities. For rural youth, we offer accessible training, mentorship, and scholarships to ensure geographic or financial barriers don’t hinder their pursuit of horsemanship mastery, preparing them for success in the arena and beyond.
Community & Inclusion
Horses have the power to unite and transform lives, especially for rural youth who may lack access to diverse opportunities. Our center is built on inclusivity, welcoming rural riders, 4-H youth, and families. Through educational programs, youth leadership initiatives, and community outreach, we provide rural youth with hands-on learning, skill-building workshops, and exposure to the equine industry’s diverse career paths—such as equine veterinarians, farriers, and event organizers. These programs foster confidence, teamwork, and a sense of belonging, ensuring the next generation has the resources to thrive.
Giving Youth a Place to Belong
Our program is open to rural youth ages 10–21, at no cost to participants. From their very first day, students are immersed in the full world of horsemanship — learning to groom, handle, and care for horses before progressing to the riding disciplines that define both the sport and the working ranch. Instruction covers roping, cutting, reining, dressage, jumping, and the everyday ranch skills — including farriery, animal health basics, and equipment care — that make a young person genuinely useful on a working operation.
Beyond the technical skills, students develop something harder to teach but just as important: confidence, responsibility, patience, and pride in a job well done. Time spent with horses has a way of building character that few other experiences can match.

Preserving Western Heritage, Embracing the Future
Montana’s rich equestrian roots run deep at SGCEC, and we honor this heritage while embracing innovation. For rural youth, we offer programs celebrating Western traditions—like rodeo skills and ranch work—while introducing modern techniques. Through world-class facilities, top-tier instruction, and exclusive events, we provide opportunities for youth to explore roles like event organizing or equine therapy, ensuring they can compete, train, and thrive at the highest levels. Our goal is to create a place where horse and rider flourish, where rural youth are empowered to embrace their potential, where tradition meets innovation, and where the equestrian spirit thrives for generations to come.
